Marijuana is bad. Marijuana can only worsen things. Medical Marijuana is a false concept. Medical Marijuana is the defense mechanism used by potheads.
You just read four false statements. Let’s start with some facts about marijuana.
1. The first fully established record of marijuana being used for medical purposes dates back to 2900 B.C. when the Chinese emperor Fu Hsi seems to have noted that, “cannabis was a very popular medicine that possessed both yin and yang.”
2. Marijuana has two active medicinal chemicals. Cannabidiol (CBD) – which impacts the brain without a high and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) – which has pain relieving properties.
3. Prescription Painkillers kill approximately 10,000 people a year whereas only a couple of deaths have been reported by the use of marijuana.
4. We do not support the use of Marijuana. We are merely shedding light on the proven therapeutic properties of Marijuana.
Keeping these facts in mind, it’s safe to say that the medicinal and health benefits of Marijuana are sadly in a very under-researched state. This is because the United States Controlled Substances Act has categorized marijuana under the list of Schedule I drugs stating that the drug has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States. However, if you were to ask the 1,246,170 medical marijuana patients in the United States, they would say that Marijuana fairly belongs to the list of Schedule III drugs, which have a currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States.
So here’s a list of 10 medical benefits of Marijuana which might convince you that smoking pot isn’t as bad as the world portrays it and in sometimes, weed is all you need.
1. Treatment of Glaucoma:
Glaucoma is a condition of increased pressure within the eyeball, causing the gradual loss of sight. In India, the estimated number of the cases of Glaucoma is around 12 million. It has been proved that smoking marijuana reduces the intraocular pressure (IOP) levels in the eye for a certain period of time. Well, that’s an eye- opener.
2. Prevention of Breast Cancer:
Breast cancer is on the rise and a laboratory study of cannabidiol (CBD) in estrogen receptor positive and estrogen receptor negative breast cancer cells showed that it caused cancer cell death while having little effect on normal breast cells. Note: Only female cannabis plants produce buds. Talk about girl power!
3. Treatment of Dravet Syndrome:
Dravet syndrome is a rare genetic epileptic encephalopathy (dysfunction of the brain). It begins in the first year of life in an otherwise healthy infant. Back in 2006, resorting to medicinal cannabis was the Hail Mary for Charlotte Figi, a 5-year-old girl who had reached a dead end with her 300 per week epileptic seizures. 4. Fighting the side effects of Chemotherapy:
Chemotherapy is said to be the cure for cancer but this cure comes with consequences. Nausea, vomiting, fatigue, lack of sleep, pain, etc. are some of the many side effects of chemotherapy and marijuana has been used effectively since decades to reverse these side effects in one way or another. Chemotherapy and weed therapy. That’s a joint initiative!
5. Lowers level of anxiety:
Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18% of the population. (Source: National Institute of Mental Health). However, the right amount of marijuana at the right time has been proved to alleviate the levels of anxiety and act as a sedative. However, excess intake might lead to increased levels of anxiety and paranoia. Watch out!
6. Weight loss and increased metabolism:
A report from the American Journal of Medicine suggests that smoking pot could be linked to better metabolic health. During the study, participants who smoked cannabis on a regular basis displayed lower insulin levels and waist circumference when compared to non-smokers. It might across as a surprise but Cannabis diets are available all over the internet. Let’s just say that burning a joint is directly proportional to burning fat.
7. Higher pain threshold:
A positive drug test might be the end of an athlete’s career but in some cases, athletes swear by using marijuana. They believe that it is a performance enhancing drug and increases pain threshold. Men’s journal interviewed elite triathlete Clifford Drusinsky, a Colorado gym owner who also leads training sessions fueled by Marijuana edibles. Drusinsky told Men’s Journal, “Marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place. When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form.” Way to go bud!
8. Prevents Lupus:
Lupus is an inflammatory disease caused when the immune system attacks its own tissue and India witnesses more than 1 million cases of lupus every year. Pain relief and inflammation are some of the common medicinal traits of cannabis. Cannabis increases the levels of anti-inflammatory protein interleukin-10 and decreases the levels of pro-inflammatory protein interleukin-2 and activates the myeloid-derived suppressor cells that help to dampen the hyperactive immune system found in lupus. Let’s just accept it, weed is the ultimate remedy.
9. Regulating Multiple Sclerosis:
Multiple Sclerosis is a disease in which the immune system eats away at the protective covering of nerves.Studies have shown that consuming marijuana has majorly helped to ease the symptoms of multiple sclerosis such as including vision loss, pain, fatigue and impaired coordination. It led to the development of Sativex, a drug manufactured by GW Pharmaceuticals that includes THC and cannabidiol, a cannabinoid that isn’t psychoactive. Thank you, Dr. Mary Jane!
10. Increases Creativity:
Creativity is an exercise for the brain. Marijuana increases creativity, hence keeping the brain healthy and active. Cannabis possesses cannabinoids, which are naturally produced in the brain. Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) also highly resembles Anandamide, which is natural transmitter to the neurons in your brain. After a neuron fires, there is a break in the transmission of thought to not overwhelm the mind and keep you calm and controlled. However, cannabis stops these breaks and allows the user to amplify their ideas and imagination. The grass in indeed greener on this side.
